I almost stopped reading this book about 1/3 way in. There were some slow areas & the religion/philosophy seemed plodding in the first part. However, when I finished the book I realized it needed that groundwork for the conclusion. The author created a very real but weird world. It is much more than just surface action with clever twists and turns. This ended up being a very good story. I would definitely read other work by this author.Product details

Throughout the book I felt I was missing something. The Faith seemed to have evolved from Christianity but the connections were never quite clear. Was the incarnation of the new divine child suppose to be based on the Christian incarnation? If so, why and how did incarnation become heresy as The Godling implied? And why did the author write a whole novel to reintroduce incarnation?
Having said that, the saving grace of the book were the characters themselves Callie, her in-laws, the boy who served her, Father Carodai were each rich, complex, engagingly flawed people. I felt invested in their stories. Plus, (without giving it away), there was a nice twist at the end.

On vacation, finished it in one go, in less then 36 hours. The second half you can't turn away.
this book was on the top free 100 book list on my fire one day. it was well written and the story idea definalty held my attention. its not an exciting book by any means but it is worth the read
Wonderfully engaging. Characters are extremely well developed. It left me wanting more, and I would like a sequel to follow Callie.
I just finished this novel and I cannot wait for more! I am ready to start all over on page one just so I can find things I might have missed the first time through. The story and characters had me hooked after a few pages. I really enjoyed how distinctly each character told their story. I would like to know more about each of the characters and their pasts and hope that future novels of Masalay will fill me in. This was a perfect book to read on my vacation. It is a fun read, but when you pick it up, don't expect to put it down till you finish.
As Collins' first novel, "The Godling" is absolutely superb. It is an intriguing exploration of contrasts in a contemporary paradise that harbors savage secrets. Light & dark, modern & primitive, beautiful & terrifying, this deliciously strange story held my complete attention through the last page. I eagerly anticipate more from this author!
