In his youth, Leonardo da Vinci wrote confidently, "I wish to work miracles." By the time of his death in 1519, when he was sixty-seven and famed throughout Europe, it seemed that he had accomplished wonders aplenty as an artist, engineer, inventor, and scientist. Here, from author Jay Williams, is the moving story of the man behind the Renaissance myth.

Leonardo da Vinci eBook Jay Williams

Just finished reading a biography of Leonardo da Vinci by Jay Williams. Can't say exactly what drew me to it, but I've found it a well written, easy flowing, informative read that allowed me to form my own mental picture of the man.

Williams follows Leonardo's life. A brilliant artist who looked at the world intently and sought to depict the true essence of his themes and subjects. A man reliant on the aegis of benefactors. A Conceptual who waded so thick into details of his work he oft times found the finished product inconsequential. To be sure he left a litany of unfinished commissions, failed ventures, family tensions, and thousands of pages of sketches, ideas, inventions, and examinations that to this day are striking in their talent and forward thinking. A man who displayed an intellect and understanding far more expansive than any of his contemporaries. An extraordinary genius. A man of unfettered imagination.

Leonardo da Vinci eBook Jay Williams Reviews

This biography resembles a collegiate term paper or lecture series. Drab details and chronology sketch the achievements, but Leonardo the man does not live in these pages. Far prefer The Agony and the Ecstacy and A Lust for Life than this type of dull account. No art in this telling.
If you are expecting a comprehensive biography or college level aesthetic analysis you will be disappointed. However, this ebook is what it purports to be. It's fair and accurate to describe it as an appetizer for a more in depth, detailed tome.
Loved this book. Well written, gives a very good overview of the life of da Vinci and the culture and times he lived in. Does talk about his most famous works and his fascination with other subjects (which were many and varied). You will delight in immersing yourself in da Vinci's world.
I have read & admired Leonardo for decades and as a therapist working with higher level brain injuries I have very successfully used his teachings & thought process to "rehabilitate" individuals. I was very fortunate to spend a week at the chateaux where lived at the end. Highly recommend this book.
A quick read with limited detail but seemed to have all the relevant facts. Unlike many biographies, the author doesn't spend much time painting a picture for you (no pun intended) or giving backstory. But I did enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone wanting a fairly concise overview of the life and accomplishments of a truly exceptional man.

Like others have mentioned, the built-in hyperlinks are wonderful.
I had heard bits and pieces of Da Vinci's life and wanted to get the real scoop. I think the author is fair and has done his research. It's also well written and the narrative flows (not always present in histories and biographies in my experience).

BTW, if you expect the real Leonardo's life to relate in any way to the TV series, Da Vinci's Demons, think again...
Absolutely nothing new. If you know nothing about Leonardo you will enjoy this. But beyond that I do not feel you would find much interest in this book.
